I'm developing a board game which I intend to print in Irish and English. The problem is, I need to use letters for some of the symbols on the map, so I'd like to find terms where the Irish and the English use the same initial letter. For instance, one of the initials is P which works for both Population and Pobal. I need to find terms which use the same initial letter in Irish and English for "Food" and "Commerce" (or some variant thereof...I can change the English term to suit the Irish if I can identify one). In the game, Commerce represents trade as well as revenue and wealth in general, so I was thinking of using Ciste. Would that work? I'm still stuck on food, though... |

What about forálacha? (The food resources are used to determine how many military units a player's territory can support, but is that the wrong type of "provisions?") |

hm... I'd rather not use a specific food like that. There are three food resources - farms, cattle, and fish. What I'm looking for is the term that would serve for all three. |

Why not use symbols - a loaf of bread, say, for food and coins for commerce? I think you would be better using symbols anyway so that the game can be adapted for other languages. |

Ní bheadh deacracht leis sin! Ní bheadh ach corr chárta le tiontú, agus na rialacha. |

I've never played Settlers of Catan, but I've always been a big fan of Sid Meyer's Civilization series. I'm thinking of this more like Risk, but with resource management, special victory goals (a special mission card which can win you the game...or you could just take over the whole map, whatever you like), and unique kingdoms (each one gets a "special characteristic" or bonus that makes sense historically). I'd rather not use the icons for two reasons. First, it winds up getting printed places (like, "the maintenance for an army is 5P,3C,2F"), and I found the easiest way to do this was using the letters. Also, because some of those special missions involve things like "control all the cattle and farms," there are icons used on the map for three specific foods already. There are essentially four food sources: fish, cattle, farms, and the base "food" produced by each territory regardless of whether or not it has a special resource on it. Some things like monasteries and rivers increase the base food value of a territory without adding a food of a specific type. I'm afraid that if I start using a fourth icon it will look like yet another kind of food and get a little confusing. I take it forálacha doesn't work? |

I take it forálacha doesn't work? Not for me. I see where you got it; but it doesn't mean provision as in supplies. http://www.focal.ie/Search.aspx?term=provision "proinn" (meal) might work; but it is a rarely used word. But that clashes with population. Hmm. |

ah...dunno how I missed that. I had checked into "fodder," and I think I confused which word had the example making reference to it and emergency medical supplies. I'm even open to using an English word that starts with a B (and use Bia), but I can't for the life of me think of any. I intend (in the end) to have the instructions in Irish and then English. I have some things (Gairm Cards, the Rí token) where I explain that the term is an Irish word and simply use that. Maybe that's what I'll do here...screw the English... |
