It's a corruption of the Latin calendae 'first day of the month'. English has borrowed the word as "calends" and "calendar". "Lá Coille" is also known as "Lá na nIarsmaí" or "Lá na Miasmaí". Note that the name is spelled "Tadhg" not "Tadgh"! |

Aonghus, whatever you think of the traditional spellings in Dinneen's dictionary, Lá Coille is not a spelling mistake, but rather the traditional spelling. |

Caille is the older spelling. See DIL under callann callann cailne caille calann c. callainn Keywords: calends; first; day; month; annal; entry Nod leat go ndúirt mé go dtugtar Lá Caille ar an lá freisin. Ní dhearna mé beachtaíocht ar bith ar Lá Coille. |

Aonghus - I know - as Dinneen says that coille came from caileann. But Lá Coille was the traditional spelling immediately before the introduction of the glorious, new, improved form of Irish. |

Nod leat nár luaigh mé litriú a bheag na a mhór. Ní gá gach rud a dhearcadh tríd priosma do sheasamh, nó seasamh aoinne eile, ar an litriú. Nod leat freisin go ndeir PSD gur Caille atá ceart! "Coille (prop[perly] for caille, gs. of caileann from calendæ), the first day of the year, ..." (Dinneen, lch. 221) |
