And speaking of Dinneen's I see theresd 2 different ones

and

"An Irish-English Dictionary: Being a Thesaurus of Words, Phrases and Idioms of the Modern Irish Language, with Explanations in English" by Patrick Stephen Dinneen

whats the difference? and if there is a difference, which is better to get.

Well, it can be hard to look some of them up, as some writers use spellings not found in Dinneen's dictionary either. So you can be dealing with 3 or 4 spellings and not just 2.

But just go according to the pronunciation. If you see deabhramh - you will have difficulty finding that in the dictionary, but the -abh- indicates a diphthong, and then you just have to look at all words starting with dea- in the dictionary.

But a few changes do account for the majority of the differences, eg -ughadh is -ú. -uighthe is -aithe.

Dinneen's Foclóir Gaedhilge agus Béarla is the one to get - it is much larger than the 1907 edition.

You could possibly use the Caighdeán Oifigiúil book to reverse engineer old spelling, I think it has a list of changes made.

Please note Aonghus' link doesn't have the section he is (I think) referring to. I believe that file isn't online anymore. The other one has the second section with the major spelling reforms. For instance, uidhe > aí, etc. I can email it to anyone who wants it, though.
