This is the opening paragraph of De Réir Uimhreacha by Pádraig Ua Maoleoin:

quote:

An bhliain? An bhfuil sí tábhachtach? 1 9 2 3 4 5...níl i mbliain ach mar a chaithfeá cloch in abhainn. Is cuma? Agus an áit? Tiocfaidh sé sin, caithfidh sé teacht, tá a thábhacht féin leis. Ach na daoine. Cuireann daoine iad féin in iúl. D'fhéadfaí a n-ainmneacha a thabhairt, cén aois iad, cad as. Ach cén mhaith? Eolas fuar lom. De réir a chéile a léiríonn duine é féin. Níl aithint ar dhaoine go gcorraíonn siad, go ngníomhaíonn, go labhrann. Agus ní raibh labhartha fós acu.

Maybe you can see why it struck me as stylistically lame, the way a schoolboy would start an essay...

i haven't got Peig and Fiche Blian ag Fás in front of me, but both of them start with very powerful opening sentences, by contrast with the above...

Yes, Carmanach, it doesn't matter if you are reading PUM's works for the language quality, but I felt in terms of literary quality, Peig and Fiche Blian ag Fás are better - but Aonghus mentioned to me another title by PUL that he felt would appeal to me better...

As I understand it De Réir Uimhreacha was his first attempt at writing; Peig dictated to various people and was heavily edited and Fiche Bliain ag Fás was heavily edited by (if I recall correctly) George Thomas.

So the comparison is not just.
