quote:

Ach cá bhfios dó, dar leis, ná go nglacfadh an fear friothálmha breab dá ndeintí breab mhaith a thairiscint dó. Thuig sé ina aigne gur i gcoinnibh mná a bhí ar an bhfear an cluiche a dh’imirt, i gcoinnibh na mná ba bhreátha agus ba mheasa agus ba ghéire dá raibh in Éirinn an uair sin.

The bit I am having a problem with is "gur i gcoinnibh mná a bhí ar an bhfear an cluiche a dh'imirt"

On the face of it, it would appear to be "mná a bhí ar an bhfear", a relative construction. But I am thinking that a sé has been missed out "a bhí SÉ ar an bhfear" - that the man would have to play the trick on a woman.

I noted that Abigail said recently that missing out third person pronouns was a noted feature of Munster dialect - and there are quite a few examples in Séadna - but this is the first example I have found in Niamh. Am I right in my interpretation of this phrase?

I could rewrite it as:

Is i gcoinne mná a bhí ar an bhfear an cluiche a imirt.

I see no need for a pronoun

It was against women that it was necessary for the man to play the game

Oh - I don't know why i thought there would be an impersonal sé there... I must be getting my wires crossed. Tá mo shreanga crosta orm inniubh, is dócha!

Ceisteanna chrosta canúna is Caitliceachais, is cosúil...

crosta [aidiacht den tríú díochlaonadh]
achrannach; trioblóideach, deacair (ceist chrosta); (le páiste) mírialta, mí-iomprach.

Aonghus is right. "that it was againt a woman that the man had to play the game"

bhí orm é a dhéanamh = I had to do it

Thanks. I would like a system where you could "tick up" posts so that people realised you had read and appreciated the posts without posting "thank you" messages...
