You've given twice the same link... about the Blaskets. Learn Irish pronunciation here: http://loig.cheveau.ifrance.com/irish/irishsounds/irishsounds.html & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/ |

I've seen those clips before. I don't understand the reference to 'when the priests were beheaded' by one of the men in the Blasket segment, though. Can anyone explain? 'They were being chased so that they would be beheaded'. ?? When I worked in Dún Chaoin in 2008, my employer said that the last adults who had been born and raised on the Great Blasket (and then resettled in Dún Chaoin) had died just a few years earlier. Two brothers. Perhaps it was two of these Ó Dálaigh brothers? When writing your messages, please use the same courtesy that you would show when speaking face-to-face with someone. - Daltaí.com |

Danny I'd imagine Sean's reference is to the Penal Times, when there was a bounty on the head of a priest. They probably hid out in the islands. (Mind you, note the twinkle in his eye as he relates the tale to Doireann Ni Bhrian) By the way, if you travel on the Luas tram in Dublin, you will hear the same Doireann announcing each stop. I think that some of the islanders are still alive. A friend of mine is a godchild of one the islanders, and I'm sure she is still hale and hearty. I'll check |

Interesting. There are definitely people alive today who were born on the Great Blasket, but I was told that none of those who were already adults when it was finally abandoned in the 50s are still around, although they could've been wrong. The lady I am thinking of was a child when she left the island |
