I've just noticed it's (apparently) possible to download books from "Internet Archive" to Kindle. I've somehow managed to resist all the marketing and hype surrounding these things but would definitely give in and buy one if I thought I could read the Archive's fine selection of Irish books on it (trying to do so off a computer screen is a recipe for migraine). The question is would it work? Would the books appear on it as they do on the computer - scans of the actual pages? There's a line to download the Kindle file. I imagine that it will be the picture of the pages for things that are that at the base file. Very few files on the Internet Archive are text. Their text files are generated from an OCR program. Try looking at something in the old type and it is a bunch of non-sense. I don't have a Kindle, so I don't know if it looks nice or not. Caveat emptor! I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin. |

You can download the Kindle for PC. It's a free reader. Obviously it won't look the same as the actual Kindle screen but the downloading of files for it should be the same. It will give you an idea. You can't actually buy ebooks in Ireland from Amazon.uk - you have to buy from the American Amazon.com Unbelievable. I might've bought a kindle if it wasn't for that. :( They have come down a lot in price. And it would stop me hurting my hand while reading LOL |

Thanks both for your advice. I downloaded the Kindle reader for PC, then tried to download a few books from Internet Archive but only one, Dinneen's Dictionary, actually worked. I opened it and, just as I'd feared - text with gobbledygook instead of cló Gaedhealach. It would have been fantastic be able to read some of those great old Irish books on it. That's all I would have used it for really. Too good to be true :) I'll keep my money. Séamus Ó Murċaḋa Inis fá réim i gcéin san Iarṫar tá Dá ngoirid luċt léiġinn Tír Éireann fialṁar cáil |
