I can't find the recent discussion of when chím/feicim can mean "I understand". People were talking about Tobar na Gaeilge and whether Munster Irish was the only dialect that did not accept this usage.
But I just found this today in chapter 12 of Niamh by PUL:
"Ní fheicim conus a bhéadh aon tairbhthe ag teacht chúichi ó n-a mbás san"
"I don't see how their death could bring her any benefit".
I think it is pretty clear that in all dialects of Irish "I see" can mean "I understand". This is part of a discussion about Béarlachas, but a lot of Irish idioms genuinely parallel the English. |

On the other thread was it not a Priest and a Judge who used the term "tchím" for "tuigim"
I am not 100% but I suspect that this is a liteary device to demonstrate faulty Irish? |

The same could be said of every idiom on my list that mirrors the English idiom (at http://www.corkirish.com/wordpress/idioms-that-remind-one-of-english-idiom). So, we would need an older native speaker to put forward an opinion, preferably some born before the First World War. |
