Last Wednesday the Department of Finance put an end to Gaeleagras -the unit in the Civil Service that provided Irish language classes, Gaeltacht courses and an Irish proficiency test. However the Civil Service Language Centre in Lansdowne House Dublin is still running and providing classes in French, German and many other foreign languages. Irish is clearly not rated by our own Department of Finance. Quite frankly I find this really outrageous that foreign languages are provided ahead of Irish classes esp with the Government publishing a 20 year strategy. I cuts are to be made and I have no problem with that why would Gaeleagras be disbanded ahead of a langauges Centre??
