http://kilkennyirish.blogspot.com/2010/08/giota-de-ghaeilg-chill-chainnigh.html Trying to put together resources and reference list on Kilkenny Irish. This is a snippet - but it is better than nothing. |

What year was that audio recording made? When writing your messages, please use the same courtesy that you would show when speaking face-to-face with someone. - Daltaí.com |

I am not one hundred percent but most likely early thirties. He is considered the last Kilkenny native speaker but if memory serves I think that some semi-natives survived after him as they invariably do. |

There's a book Duanaire Osraíoch by Dáithí Ó hÓgáin which deals with folk poetry in Co. Kilkenny in the late 18th and early 19th century. The introduction contains a short account of the state of Irish in the county at that time. As one would imagine the language was stronger in those areas of the county adjacent to counties Tipperary and Waterford as opposed to the areas abutting Carlow and Laois. Interestingly, the authorities sometimes had to hire interpreters in order to interact with the locals. (Presumably this was on an ad hoc basis. I doubt if there was any kind of career structure in place for them!) |

How long is the actual Kilkenny native speaker clip? It sounds like there's more recent audio overlapping it. When writing your messages, please use the same courtesy that you would show when speaking face-to-face with someone. - Daltaí.com |

I'd say it is no more than a few seconds. The original is kept in RBÉ. Obviously it is a little longer, as I said, it is merely a snippet. |
