What would the irish for 'why not' be? Or is there no negative form of this statement?

Braitheann sé ar an abairt iomlán.

Ní féidir "why not" a rá leis féin.

Cén fáth ná/nach + briathair

Example:

Seán:Ba mhaith liom dul chuig na pictiúirí anocht.(I'd like to go to the cinema tonight)

Athair Sheáin: Tuige nach rachfá? (Why wouldn't you go?)

"Tuige" is a contraction of "Cad chuige" which is used as "Why" in many contexts.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ní bheadh. Tá gá le briathair i gconaí, ar an cúis céanna nach féidir "Yes" ná "No" a thabhairt mar fhreagra ar cheist sa Ghaeilge.

ta sin iomlan ceart is why not?

No. I was answering a question, by saying what Joe wrote is correct.

Tuige céard?

Dúirt Joe

Ní raibh sé; mar sin dúirt mé sin.

Nó "Tuige go bhfuil briathar de dhíth"

Toisc gurbh é sin gnás na Gaeilge.

Cad chuige [cén fáth] nach ea, nach raibh, nach ndéanfadh, etc. (with repetition of appropriate form of verb) atá ag mo fhoclóir.

I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.

Why cant you use cén fath nach bhfuil/raibh.Though I dont know where you would go after with that?!You may need to use the verb in question arís.

Or just cén fath,or cad chuige.I have this problem myself.

'Cad ina taobh' nach dtuigeann sibh sin?
Can 'cad ina taobh' be used in that respect, a hAonghus?

cad ina thaobh (is mar canathaobh a scríobhtar go minic é)

Deir Ó Dónaill gur "what about it" nó "why" is ciall leis; mar sin is féidir.

Sílim gurbh é sin a déarfaí ó dheas.

I sometimes use "cén dochar" as a fuzzy equivalent of "why not". As in: "ar mhaith leat deoch eile? -- á cinnte, cén dochar!"

(Actually, what I say much more often than that is "cén fáth nach?" but I mean that sarcastically to annoy my purist friends and you should never ever say that in polite company, it's a filthy Anglicism.)
