A Chairde Gabhigí mo leithscéal as ucht mo Bhéarla - I have been asked what the plural of "love" is in Irish..ach ní barúil agam ar bith! The usage would be my bright loves, or I remember the loves of my life..that kind of thing. Any help much appreciated! Dáithí i Sasana |

I'm afraid there's no correct plural for "grá". "I remember the loves of my life" might be "Cuimhním na ngrá mo shaoil" but this is very much a word for word translation. Also it leaves the pluralness to be shown by the definite article, and I'm not sure if that is "kosher". You could perhaps use "gach grá mo shaoil" but that has the feeling of "every single love"... You might need a different word than "grá" altogether. Although it is a noun it may not be workable as an identifier of a person or object. Wait for the experts to share their wisdom. Tine, siúil liom!

I remember the loves of my live : Cuimhním ar na mná a dtug mé grá daofa (if they are women) Cuimhním ar na fir a dtug mé grá daofa (if they are men) Learn Irish pronunciation here: http://loig.cheveau.ifrance.com/irish/irishsounds/irishsounds.html & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

Go raibh maith maith agaibh go léir! But...is there really no plural for what is, after all, a common enough noun? D |

There tend not to be plurals for abstract nouns. There are other words to refer to people one loves: Leannán or searc, for example, which have plurals. leannán [ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh] grá geal nó searc duine; aicíd, galar (is olc an leannán atá ort). searc [ainmfhocal baininscneach den dara díochlaonadh] grá. |

It's not so strange that a noun wouldn't have a plural. "Anger" is a noun. Does it have a plural? It's not something of which you can have more than one. I may have anger, but I don't have angers. Or, there may be sunshine outside, but not sunshines. In Irish, rather than "I remember the loves of my life," I think it would probably be constructed more like "I remember those I have loved during my life" or similar (see the examples given by Lughaidh and Aonghus above). The pronoun is plural, not the word "love." The only time in Irish, as far as I can tell, when people are referred to as "love" are in the terms of endearment, i.e. "a ghrá," "mo ghrá," etc. I believe these terms of endearment have romantic connotations, so presumably the person I address as "a ghrá" would be my *one* love/darling, so the plural is not necessary here either. But don't take me as an authority. Slán agus beannacht, Séamas
