I was going to join in but Éadaoin has beaten me to it. Arbh fhiú fanacht air? Would it be worth waiting for (it)? B'fhiú! It would. Níorbh fhiú. It would not. (The é etc is not used in such responses. The briefer the better.) That's the most precious grammatical feature we have in Irish: An Chopail / The Copula. We must defend it and fight off the constant encroachment by that other interloper: Bí (Tá / Bíonn / Bhí / Beidh / Bhíodh / Bheadh) Did I hear somewhere that An Chopail / Copula has been lost entirely in Manx and less used in Gaidhlig na hAlban? |

Seconded: "Arbh fhiú fanacht leis?" or "An mb'fhiú fanacht leis?" The copula hasn't disappeared in Manx, it is still used in many cases, but not really as in Irish, and quite often (in some cases) they use "ta" where you would have "is" in Irish, so it may be confusing if you know Irish and wanna learn Manx or vice-versa... Scottish Gaelic uses the copula as much as in Irish, but not exactly in the same way, you say more often " 'S e peann a tha ann" than "Is peann e" (as we would have in Irish). They often use the "'S e X a tha ann (an) Y" while we would have "Is X Y" in Irish. But still, unlike Manx, you wouldn't use "tha" alone as a copula in Scottish Gaelic. Ar ábhar difriúil ar fad,tá ceist agam-cad é an Gaeilge ceart ar "Northern Ireland" : Éire Thuaidh nó Tuaisceart Éireann? Nó bhfuil an dá cheann ceart?(nó mícheart) Ceapaim go bhfuil "Èirinn a Tuadh" an t-ainm as Gàilig na hAlban, ach níl a fhios agam cén Gaeilge ceart atá air. |
