I am writing a piece on importance of dialects in the Irish language. I would like to have information on extinct dialects. I am aware of the Roscommon, Monaghan and Louth dialects. An bhfuil a fhios ag einne ar canuinti bas eile?

Tá sé furast go leor, go bhfios domh fuair achan chanúint bás seachas cuid na Rinne, Iarthar Chiarraí, Iarthar Chorcaí, Oileán Chléire, Oileán Árann, Chonamara, Mhuigh Eo, agus Thír Chonaill (agus Reachlainne is dócha ach níl ach cainteoir amháin fágtha, dar liom).

As I said : all except these ones ! Take all counties or areas where Irish is dead as a naturally-transmitted language...

Seanchas Ghleann Gaibhleann gives an account of the dialect of North West Cavan. It was published in BÉALOIDEAS 19?? (not sure of the date). There are people alive still who heard that dialect spoken and could recreate the sounds, word forms, and phrases. |
