to all of my long time friends...it's been a while since I've posted but I've been watching and "listening" faithfully. I'm about to fulfill a life long dream of purchasing a sailboat and living aboard her in Annapolis, MD. Without going into the details, I'd like to name her "Promise Kept" as in "I kept this promise that I made"..that is the context. I promised we would have one of these and we do...I kept my promise. I'm thinking geall néata But something doesn't feel right about it. I would welcome any suggestions that convey the meaning. I would settle for An Geall, "The Promise", if that's correct. She has a clean stern(no name at this point) and I intend to purchase her within the next 45 days. Any help would be most appreciated. le meas, James Is minic a bhris beál duine a shrón. Fáilte roimh cheartú, go deo.

Fáilte ar ais! Geall has a wider meaning than promise (including wager); néata is "neat". For a short name, you could go with "Geallta", promised. Gealltanas narrows the meaning; Gealltanas comhlíonta would be promise fulfilled, with no ambiguity. (Message edited by aonghus on May 21, 2010) |

Go raibh maith agat! Geallta it is...love it! Short, easy to pronounce..even for the 'un enlightened' (won't get confused over a radio, distress call, etc) Perfect! Is minic a bhris beál duine a shrón. Fáilte roimh cheartú, go deo.

Ceann maith, cinnte. Ach "Beart de réir mo bhriathair" a thugfadh an chiall leis. Níl an chiall gealltanas ag baint le beart. |

Go raibh maith agat, a Aonghuis. Dea-mholadh. Smaoinigh mé féin air sin fosta. Ráiteas breá ach bhí mé ag déanamh go raibh sé rófhada mar ainm. Shílfinnse go gciallaíonn "beart i gcrích" comhlíonadh an rud a bhí curtha roimhe ag an duine a dhéanamh. Agus nach é sin atá i gceist anseo? Tuigim nach bhfuil trácht ar bith ar an fhocal "promise" ann ach fóireann an leagan seo dá bhfuil faoi chaibidil anseo, dar liom féin cé bith. Ó Dónaill: Beart i gcrích, success (of project). Success (ceannacht) of project (an bháid). Sílim féin go bhfuil sé deas slachtmhar, nádúrtha agus gonta, agus níl sé chomh débhríoch le "geallta" mar ainm. (Geallta= le pósadh &rl.) |
