This is a quote from another post but my question is off-topic so I started a new thread

quote:

I think you will need some kind of class; there are some online. You will also need to listen to as much as you can. I suggest you listen to Radio na Gaeltachta as much as possible.

I am taking a class that is teaching the connemara dialect but I'm a subscriber to the the Blas podcast (Ulster dialect). I want to listen to as much Irish as I can but will it mess me up learning if I'm listening to the Ulster dialect talk show but learning Connemara Irish in class?

P.S. what dialect is spoken on Radio na Gaeltachta? I'm in the USA and don't even know if I have access to listening to that.

I believe RnaG is based in Donnegal so I think that is the Ulster dialect.

I am not sure about listening to different dialects making it harder as I have just begun studying as well.

All of them. You can check which studio the program is broadcast from. If it is from Casla, it will likely be mostly Conamara Irish. (But that is HQ, so you will hear a variety, especially on news programmes)

You will also be pretty safe with Blas. The lady who hosts it learned a lot in Conamara, and she has people on all the time that are not from Ulster. You'll also find that the differences are not great. When you encounter them, though, note them, and copy your teacher since that would probably be the more effective way to learn.

My favourite RnaG programme is An Saol O Dheas which is a magazine programme broadcast from the Kerry studio, and therefore predominently in the Munster dialect
