Heyas, came across this and it sounds lovely. Do Donegal speakers say 'cionn' instead of 'ceann' for the singular? Like a nice one: cionn deas, instead of ceann deas? |

Yes we say "cionn". It's not another pronunciation of "ceann", but the old dative used instead of the nominative. See "thar cionn" etc in Connemara, with "cionn" in the dative case (it's a set phrase) as well ; but Donegal people use "cionn" for both nominative and dative. Go brea! Grma. Is maith liom é. Chuala mé 'ceanna' chomh maith mar iolra de 'ceann'- seachas 'cinn'. Tá an dá rogha ann. |

Seidh. Chan úsáidtear an dá fhoirm iolradh sin ins na cásannaí céarna i gcónaí, mar shompla chan úsáidfí "ceanna" i ndiaidh na n-uimhreach : féadtar "cheannaigh mé na ceanna ba deise" a ráidht ach déarfaí i gcónaí "trí cinn, ceithre cinn, srl", ní dóigh liom gur cheart "trí ceanna" a ráidht. S ionann. Deirtear "seidh" nó "seh" go minic i dTír Chonaill, in áit "sea" nó "seadh". Learn Irish pronunciation here: http://loig.cheveau.ifrance.com/irish/irishsounds/irishsounds.html & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

Hey Kidz, I enjoy the dialogues and information they disseminate in the forums. I am attempting to translate a poem by Ciaran Carson and I was hoping someone could help me tease out the meaning of these lines: Me a scuabadh, me a scaipeadh/ Go beal an dorais/ /Seidean beag amuigh. I apologize for the lack of fadas; I can not figure out how to tap into the fada stable. Thanks, Retro |
