I think Séamus Ua Murchadha mentioned to me once something about the temporal use of agus. See this sentence:

Is dóich liom gur díreach agus mé ag imtheacht ó
Maghchromtha do leigeadh Micheál Daibhéid amach as
an bprísún.

Can agus always be used for "when"? Would the sentence be correctly rewritten "gur díreach nuair a bhíos ag imtheacht"? Or does Irish prefer to use agus when it connects with a preceding clause? What I mean is that "gur díreach agus" might feel like a construction?

This is from the first sentence of chapter 23 of Mo Sgéal Féin.

My gut feeling is that agus needs to be referring to something else, joining two pieces together.

Agus mé ag léamh an píosa seo, tháinig mé ar do cheist.

You will sometimes see Hiberno English phrases using "and" for "when" in a similar fashion.

I do not think you always can. I think the conditions are pretty narrow, which are explained here:

under "with infinitive constructions"
