Dear all, this is a wonderful book by a Finnish academic. Don't be fooled. It is full of points of use to students of Irish. There are many aspects of Irish grammar that are more intuitive to speakers of Hiberno-English than other Englishes. I think all learners of Irish would benefit from this book. Scandinavian Universities are doing some of the best research into English nowadays -- I note that English universities seem preoccupied by trendy topics ("the hermeneutics of Father Christmas"?? you get the type), whereas Scandinavian schools are more focused on the nuts and bolts of morphology and syntax. The book is available for free download from This is an Uzbek site, and I don't think copyright runs in Uzbekistan-which is entitled to enact its own laws on the subject. To download it, you need to register first at, and then find it and then download the ZIP file - there are hundreds of linguistics textbooks available here. I bought this book...rather pricey but worth it...for use in the MA thesis I'm writing at the moment. I was recommended to me by a professor who had used it in her PhD dissertation. Good stuff, it is... |

David I tried your link, but all it seems to to is to take me a sketchy-looking website asking for money. I don't see any option that allows you to download as a zip file |

It is a wee bit tricky... 1. Register if you haven't 2. Search for the document... "filppula" hits three books 3. Click "read more" (or maybe it's "read all") in relatively small font below the cover image 4. Click Download 5. Select free option on the page with meters... or along those lines... worked out for me. (Message edited by curiousfinn on April 14, 2010) Tine, siúil liom!

David, I will be happy to restore the link, but first you will have to unequivocally establish that the book is not subject to copyright protection. Caoimhín Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.

There's plenty of excellent stuff on that site. I've just downloaded the audio to the Linguaphone Irish course. I'm unable to download and open rar files though which is a pity. Séamus Ó Murċaḋa Inis fá réim i gcéin san Iarṫar tá Dá ngoirid luċt léiġinn Tír Éireann fialṁar cáil

Tá mé beagnach cinnte go bhfuil uirlis saor in aisce ann do RAR. Tá ceann anseo http://download.cnet.com/Free-RAR-Extract-Frog/3000-2250_4-10804840.html (Ach níor bhain mé feidhm as riamh) |

For those who want "electronically searchable" versions of texts that they already own in hard copy, there are a lot of popular books available from that site. Go raibh maith agat, a Dháibhí. |

There are some good "encyclopaedias of Irish culture and history" on that site - well worth it for someone who likes to browse through and read about Ireland. Luasgann an tAṫair Peadar mo ṡaoġal!.
