Cásca shona dhaoibh go léir. :) Quick question, coming from Lughaidh’s reply – I’ve found that ‘Gurab amhlaidh duit’ means ‘same to you’, but what does it mean literally, or what is the function of the word 'gurab' here? I’ve been learning Irish for a couple of years, but I can’t break it down in a way that makes complete sense to me. Thanks. :) |

A Aoi Neamhchláraithe, a chara, Gurb amhlaidh dhuit is made up of [an chopail] + [the word amhlaidh meaning "so" or "thus"] + [an forainm réamhfhoclach] gurb = may it be amhlaidh = so / thus duit = do + tú = to you / for you An chopail / The copula is a "defective verb" having only two forms: "is" for the present and future and "ba" for the past and conditional mood. It combines with the "míreanna briathartha" or verbal particles and that gives gur (before a consonant) and gurb before a vowel. Obviously there is much more to it than that but you should get a gist of the elements of "gurb amhlaidh dhuit" from that. (By the way or dála an scéil I don't know why I put the h on duit. Euphony? To me it sounds right. According to some books it looks wrong. It is not significant.) Anois cá bhfuil na huibheacha seacláide a tugadh dom ar maidin go mbaine mé alp as ceann díobh mura bhfuil siad go léir ite? Bainimis sult as an lá. |

Dhuit a deirimse, agus mórán gach duine eile - ach ar chúis nach dtuigim, duit a scríobhtar. |

Taidhgín, it really is gurab and not gurb in this sentence, as this is the go+subjunctive of the copula. Just as raibh is subjunctive in "go raibh maith agat", so the copula is subjunctive in "gurab amhlaidh dhuit". The negative is "nárab amhlaidh dhuit". |
