I am compiling a spreadsheet on Irish novels and novelists - na scríbhneóirí do dhein úsáid den Ghaelainn, dár nóigh - and it is available on my website at
www.corkirish.com/grammar/literature.pdf It lists all the novels listed by Alan Titley in the back of his book "an tÚrscéal Gaelainne". They are what he viewed as the main works between 1901 (the first novel in Irish - Cormac Ua Conaill) and 1990. Pity he didn't write an update to cover the last 20 years.
More than 100 books are listed. I give the year of publication, the title of the book and some brief description where known, and the number of pages. I determine the number of page from the entry in the National Library of Ireland catalogue; some of the books are not in the NLI catalogue and seem genuinely obscure. This gives you an idea of how substantial the book was. Cormac Ua Conaill is for example only 82 pages long. I am to find out if the book is still in print - by looking at the Litriocht catalogue, as gradually more and more older books are being re-edited into available editions (and I totally welcome that).
I am also trying to find out about the authors. I list the authors' names, dates of birth and death, place of birth or upbringing, and some information on the author. I am lookng for biographical information on:
Seán Ó Dúnaighe
Diarmuid Ó hÉigéartaigh
Diarmuid Ua Laoghaire
Tadhg Ó Rabhartaigh
Séamus MacConmara
If anyone know anything about these people - I would appreciate any info.
The PDF contains all the works Titley mentioned, but I am only up to 1939 in giving all the background info. If you know anything about any of the authors, I would love to know it. What other things did they write? Any autobiographies or translations or note that I could put in the notes section? Any interesting details of their life I missed out?
