Well .. mine and a lot of people's favourite book of all time and I only thought of looking for the translation of 'Alice in Wonderland' the other night! So I saw that Padraig O Cadhla did a translation in 1922 and I'd rather get this than the newer translation from 2003. I emailed Kenny's bookshop in Galway who are brilliant for sourcing these old books and guess what, only 2 weeks ago they sold the copy they had to Notra Dame :( So the search continues! Does anybody know where I can buy a copy? If this doesn't work out I'll try borrow one from a library somewhere but reading and having my own 'Alice in Wonderland' in Irish from 1922 will keep me happy for the rest of the year :D |

Hi. Your chances of finding a 1922 copy are small, but you could set up a notification from abebooks.com to let you know if it becomes available. If I were you I would enter the correct old name in the search term in two forms: Eaċtraḋ Eiḃlís i dTír na nlongantas Eachtradh Eibhlís i dTír na nIongantas also some UK bookshops don't know what lenited characters are and just enter them as the straight letters, so you could search for: Eactrad Eiblís i dTír na nlongantas You could be waiting years for the book to turn up... If it does turn up it might end up an investment. Many of these old books go for around 30 euros - they are usually very unimpressive looking books, poorly bound, and dingy dark covers, and it would be hard to justify a high price, but some bookstores are starting to offer them for sale at hugely inflated prices - I have seen books going for 40 euros in one store and 200 euros in another - with Dublin Bookbrowsers being the culprit for the hugely inflated prices. I think this is just rank profiteering, but one day these books might genuinely come to be seen as very valuable. |
