"i ngeall orm féin", b'fhéidir. nó "shaothraigh mé tinneas cinn dom féin." Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Define sick. Sick as in ill, or sick as in mad or crazy. I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.

Tá an phóit orm! A chonách sin orm féin. Mé fhéin is ciontaí. Leigheas ar an bpóit deoch eile! póit = a hangover from drink a chonách sin orm féin = It serves me right. Mé fhéin is ciontaí (< ciontach) = I am most to blame. I am not sure if "Tá póit orm" or "tá an phóit orm" might be said. This is not something that anyone would readily admit to. |

As for "Tá croí briste orm" with or without a fleiscín that would not be said. "Tá mo chroí cráite agat" might be said in anger to a child. "You have tormented my heart." I am not saying "croíbhriste" as an adjective would not occur in poetry but I cannot think of any occasion where it was used. "croíbhriste" is not a noun and the structure "Tá [tinneas, mothúchán] orm" requires a noun. Tá fearg, brón, áthas, lúcháir orm etc. |

A fun workaround : Tá mo cheann nimhneach [nó tinneas cinn orm] mar bhí mé ar an asal aréir. Add: féinghearrtha, féindéanta may work ... (Message edited by seánw on February 27, 2010) I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.

Féindéanta looks like a calque from English. I always bear in mind Peadar Ua Laoghaire's comment that the word féinteagasg is not proper Irish - just a calque from English that he still felt was unnatural in Irish. Probably the same with most words or putative words beginning with féin- |

'Is ormsa féin an locht' might work. But I think the one with 'tarraing' is better.. sounds more negative and distressing. |

quote:Féindéanta looks like a calque from English. Certainly they were calques! Just threw them out to stir the pot. If they're unnatural to Irish speakers, then they will die on their own. Since few adjectives prefix nouns, I would imagine that they still sound unnatural. I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.
