I have an Irish word of the day gadget that gives wrong information occasionally so I need to double check a sentence that doesn't seem correct to me. They wrote: Is le gairid tógadh an teach seo. This house was built recently. Can "is" be used in past tense structure like that? I am fully aware that Google translate is useless, but just for kicks, I asked for the English to Irish translation and got: An tógadh le gairid ar mhúineadh seo. |

I think it looks OK - there is an implied "a" before tógadh though. Literally "It is recently that this house was built". The past form of the copula - "Ba le gairid tógadh an teach seo" - looks fine too. I think either are OK. Wait for the grammar mavens to come along with something more coherent. |

"Is gairid gur tógadh an teach seo" an rud a déarfainn féin. Ní chaithfinn an "le" isteach ann ar chor ar bith. "Ba ghairid gur tógadh an teach" - chiallódh sin nár thug sé ró-fhada orthu é a thógáil, más inné más fiche bliain ó shin. Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

(...nár thug sé ró-fhada, nó ró-fhad? Ní mé cé is cirte acu. An dara ceann is dóigh.) Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Míle buíochas, a hAbigail. Scríobh mé "is le deanaí a thosaigh mé ag léamh (teideal an leabhair)..." ar snáth eile. Táim ag eirí amhrasach anois! |
