This is a great book: Turas na dTaoiseach nUltach as Éirinn It is the diary of Tadhg Óg Ó Cianáin, from a scholarly Armagh family, as he accompanied the earls on their "flight" in 1607-08 to Rome. It is edited by Nollaig Ó Muraile and comes with an English translation opposite and lot of articles discussing the history context. The price is around $78. See

Also: Corpus Astronomiae, the 1694 translation by Maghnas Ó Dómhnaill of a 1615 Spanish original, summarising scientific knowledge of the day, has been reprinted. It is availabe for $29.40 from UK bookshop at http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&recentlyadded=al l&sortby=17&sts=t&tn=Corpus+Astronomiae&x=0&y=0 (Abebooks quotes prices in $ for some reasons)

These are both key Ulster works - although one would hesitate to describe either as "Ulster Irish" - at least they are 17th century Irish and not the same as the Donegal Irish of today (arguably closer to modern-day Cork Irish than any Ulster Irish of today as such).

This is a flavour of the latter:

Is é is domhan ann, .i. an uile nídh, mar atá na flaithis, na realta 7 na h-eilemeintidhe; 7 fós gach nídh eile cruthuighthe. Goirid na Gréigig Cosmos dhe so 7 na Laidneoiridhthe mundus .i. oirnéaltacht 7 dathmhaileacht amhail 7 mar atá. Do cruthuigheadh an domhan insa bhfoghmhar, do réir mar adeir ughdair phrionnsapálta, i mí Sep.; 7 is é is adhbhar dóibh chuige sin, do bhrigh gurab é gnáth-bhéas na hEabhruidheach, na nÉgipteach, na bPersians, na nGréigeach, 7 na gcineadhacha uile mar éirgheas grian, an bhliadhain do ríomh ó Shep. sa tsean-aimsir.

Funnily enough, both works use Seipteimbris as the word for September!

For example:

I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.

Scholarly works often used Latin Names for months. Ó Cianáin used a lot of foreign words, as I understand it. English and the languages of the places he was passing through.
