Just writing a letter as Gaeilge and I wanted to start off with the equivalent of 'I hope you are well'. The letter is to someone I don't know and will be slightly formal, but not too much so. What would be a proper and traditional way to write this in Irish, and not a direct translation? I have the obvious 'tá súil agam go bhfuil tú go maith/go bhfuil an saol go maith leatsa etc. but they seem a bit crude and chirpy.. I am definitely trying to avoid direct translation and to do better than what the translations that I have come up with above. Hope someone can help! |

'Beatha agus sláinte!' Ró neamh-fhoirmiúil, b'fhéidir? |

I think you've said exactly what you want to say and it is good. "Tá súil agam go bhfuil tú go maith" Seems neither chirpy nor crude to me, Faberm |
