could you tell me what "the watering hole" is in irish, i think its "Poll na n'uisce" can anyone tell me for sure? |

And the difference is?
If you look up "watering" in de Bhaldraithe you will see that it is worked around for the sense "to give animals a drink", e.g. Deoch a thabhairt do chapaill.
I suppose you could say "An Poll Óil" (The drinking hole)
or some such. |

You could use
"Log an Óil" or "Spota an Óil"
log [ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh]
áit íseal, poll, clais; duibheagán (i log na hoíche).
or
spota [ainmfhocal firinscneach den cheathrú díochlaonadh]
marc nó ball beag; áit ar leith; paiste (spota grinn). |

It's the subtle difference between H20 and the process of giving animals a drink that our neighbour is looking for.
But this is another example of there not being a 1:1 mapping between languages! |

I understood this when I posted, Aonghus, and recognize that some others may not get the humor intended. There is ambiguity in English as well. The terms which refer to animals mostly were given for humor, as say the An Deochlann pub conveys as well. Is a pub really a lann? Obviously (to me) there is a double meaning intended by lann (house & land). I was just offering some terms that might expand it beyond the literal "hole of water".
