The City of Richmond in Virginia, USA, is home to many Irish immigrants who came here in the early 1800's. Many worked in the Tredegar Ironworks factory on the James River. Shockoe Hill Cemetery (1822) is the oldest municipally owned burial site in the City. There are many beautiful headstone marking the many interred Irish who lived here, many with the Irish County of origin listed. The "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery" partner with the City and work to promote, protect and celebrate those who are interred in this important graveyard. The Great Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall, is buried here, along with many of the friends, family and lovers of Edgar Allen Poe.
The "Friends" group has created a web site which we would like to begin translating into different languages. I have used the Google language translating software to begin the process of converting the site into Gaelic. The Google software is designed to let a language specialist edit each paragraph. I was hoping to find someone who might help in this process. Here is the draft translated link:

http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2 Ffoshc.rrpfoundation.org%2F&sl=en&tl=ga

Please contact me at if you could help me with this project. Ultimately I would like to begin creating links with the different Irish Counties who have descendants buried here at the cemetery.

Sincerely, Doug Welsh, President, FoSHC

Lonnaigh go leor imirceacha Éireannacha a tháinig anseo óna 1800í ar leith i gCathair Richmond i Virginia, SAM.

D’oibrigh go leor acu i monarcha iarann Tredegar ar bhruach abhainn an James.

Sí Reilig Shockoe Hill (1822) an suíomh adhlactha is sine faoi úinéireacht an Chathair.

Tá go leor clocha cinn deasa ag marcáil an slua d’Éireannaigh atá curtha ansin. Agus go leor dóibh sin lena gContae dúchais liostáilte.

Tá “Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery” ag oibriú i gcomhpháirtíocht leis an gCathair chun ceiliúradh, cosaint, agus aird a thabhairt air na daoine atá curtha san reilig thábhachtach seo.

Tá’n Ard-Phríomh Bhreitheamh na Stáit Aontaithe John Marshall curtha anseo, chomh maith le cairde, muintir agus leanaitheoirí Edgar Allen Poe.

Wow..this brings back soooo many memories. In my youth, which seems so long ago, I used to spend more than my fair share of time in the Shockoe Slip region. The Tobacco Company being one of my primary haunts. At the time, I had no idea of the connection with the Irish.

Thanks for sharing!

Fáilte roimh cheartú, go deo.

Thanks James...what do you think of my idea of translating the web site? Is this worth the effort...?.Bridmhor contacted me, as you can see, but I have heard no more. Would you be willing to be our Irish/American Ambassador for
the Cemetery.....? I would like to make contact with the counties where those buried here came from. Sincerely, Doug Welsh,
