Ceist gasta, gach duine: I’ve been watching a bit of TG4 recently, and I keep hearing a word that is always translated as ‘fine’ that I’m not familiar with. Eg. I’m fine = Tá mé…something. It’s pronounced something like ‘tao’ or ‘tow’ (‘ow’ as in when you hurt yourself). For the life of me I can’t work it out. If anyone can identify the word I’m talking about, could you also tell me whether its use might be limited to one region? I’m thinking Conemara, but not quite sure why! Many thanks. |

Togha - pronounced "tow" to rhyme with "cow" - and you're right that it's mostly a Connemara thing. Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

It is also used to mean "the best of" - "togha na gaeilge" = "the best of Irish", "togha bia" = "the best of food" etc. |

...ar fiú éisteacht leis - mar a déarfadh an té díreach é! Is geal leis an bhfiach dubh a ghearrcach féin.
