Anybody know if there's a lexemic frequency dictionary available for Irish. (I'm referring to a roster of a language's vocabulary ordered from most frequently used to least.) Thanks. |

Greannmhar. Faghthar "conradh" agus "airgeadas" i measc na bhfocal sin (tá sé coiteanta i dtéacsannaí riaracháin srl, ach maidir leis a' chaint nó le téacsannaí nach rudaí oifigiúla, nó dóigh liom é!), agus níos measa, faghthar bíonn agus mbíonn, comórtas agus chomórtas... fá mar ab fhocla difriúla iad... "the most common 1000 words in a large corpus of Irish texts" a scríobhadh thuas... seidh, a large corpus of administrative texts, is dócha... Tá sé deacair a fháil amach cad é na míle focla is coitianta sa Ghaeilge is minic a athraíonn focla de réir cén saghas focal roimhe é srl. Gaeilge go deo!

Bhain an togra le Fleiscíniú uathoibríoch, sin an toisc go bhfuil foirmeacha ann freisin. Agus is i dtéacsanna mar sin a bheadh a leithéid de dhíth. Tá corpas na Gaeilge ann, ach níl fhios agam an ndearna aoinne scagadh de réir minicíocht air. http://shop.ria.ie/shop/shopdisplayproducts.asp?catalogid=358 |

A Dhomhnall, May I ask why you are looking for one? The reason I ask is because I often wish that dictionary entries would be arranged in order from most frequent usage. I don't know how many times I have stared at mutiple entries and just scratched my head because I didn't know which word I should pick from. If they would arrange them in order of frequency of usage, in theory you would be safer picking the first entry listed. Or is this more of a "you want to see which words are actually being said in Irish today" kind of thing? I believe that Mbm's Póta Focal lists and gives full usage examples of 4500 words from a frequency list. The site should be at www.potafocal.com, but as recently discussed was down temporarily. |

Abigail, thank you! I searched and searched and never unearthed that link. Fabulous. May I ask why you are looking for one? DC, I'm just looking for the most efficient way to increase my vocabulary and for me it makes best sense to assimilate vocabulary based on frequency of word-use. |

Someone has made a list of 4500 Irish words at http://www.yorku.ca/inpar/language/IrishFlashCards.pdf It is organized as a PDF to create flashcards. I think you could print it out and cut it up to create flashcards. I don't know how the words were chosen... |

The list of 1000 words was by Kevin Scannel, who created the Irish spell checking software for unix and open office. It would be interested to see if he would do a longer list. The existing list contains as separate items deir, deirtear, rá, ráite, all from the one verb. So it has not been fully lemmatized. |

Actually, I asked him about that and, voilà, here is the list of the 5000 most frequently used words. He even named the file after me! *lol* Thanks Kevin! http://borel.slu.edu/obair/harrity.txt |
