hi folks, i'm reading "an ghaeilge ó lá go lá" by A.J.Hughes.

he says, "an leictreoir (é) Tomás?", "an banaltra (í) Máire?"

must the brackets be there?
or what purpose do they serve?

tá brón orm as mo aineolach!!

He probably means that the é and í are in there in standard Irish and other dialects of IRish, but are often omitted in Ulster Irish.

The brackets mean that the bit between them is optional. The author wants to tell you that you can say either "an leictreoir Tomás?" or "an leictreoir é Tomás?".
