Book Club = Club Leabhar (gen. pl) Now, is it the "we read a book each month, and call that 'book of the month'" club? Club Leabhair na Míosa (gen sing of leabhar. And tricky. Is there only one such book?) Or "we meet once a month to read books" Club Míosúil na Leabhar (gen. pl.) (Message edited by aonghus on October 15, 2009) |

Leabhar na Míosa. = Book of the Month Club Leabhar na Míosa. = Book of the Month Club. This is assuming that this club meets to discuss one particular book each month. Of course, Club Leabhar na Míosa could also be a prize or award granted to one particular book club among many on a monthly basis, if you get my drift. |

quote:Club Leabhair na Míosa (gen sing of leabhar. And tricky. Two genitives? That's tricky ... Club Leabhar na Míosa is fearr. (Leabhar = nom. sing.) Lars |

Tá sé seo go hiontach! Thanks for all the input. I knew this was a tricky one, andI expected Aonghus to "demand" that I try it myself first before he gave an answer. Joe, your assumption is correct; it's for an online club that participates in discussing or reading reviews about one particular Irish (as Gaeigle nó as Béarla) book each month. And there will be one book per month. I'll wait for consensus on whether it's "leabhar" or "leabhair," since I see a difference in the suggestions above. Go raibh maith agaibh, David (member formerly known as Mac Léinn) www.irishbooksandgifts.com

I think Lars' advice dovetails with this semi official advice: http://www.acmhainn.ie/tearmai/seimhiu.htm "Más aonad brí an dara péire ainmfhocal agus nach focal gníomaíochta an chéad cheann díobh sin, ní dhéantar infhilleadh ach ar an ainmfhocal deireanach, is é sin, más úinéireacht nó cineál ruda atá á chur in iúl: " |

In the US, Book of the Month is a business that sells books. You sign up to receive a new book each month. I'm wondering if the name is copywrited? |

Very good point Nosy and thanks! I never thought that the phrase was copyrighted, but I think you're right. Oh, well at least I learned some Irish along the way. David www.irishbooksandgifts.com

I doubt you can trademark/copyright such a common phrase. |

Conas deitear "Perhaps, but I don't want to find out the hard way?" B'fhéidir, ach ní maith liom eolas a fháil sa bealach contráilte? www.irishbooksandgifts.com
