Scríobh Ó'Siadhail i 'Learning Irish' (níl mé in inmhe an leathanach a aimsiú anois fiú) go mbíonn 'Éirinn' á úsáid in áit 'Éire' sa 'nominative' uaireantaí.

Ní fhaca mé Éirinn scríofa sa chás seo ariamh, ar seoladh nó rud ar bith.

An mbíonn sé á úsáid ag éinne anseo?!

Bíonn, nós a d'fhoghlaim mé ón gConnachtach mná ba mhúinteoir dom tráth.

Athrú é atá tar éis teacht ar roinnt ainmfhocla eile: abhainn < abha, gualainn < guala, Albain, an Mhumhain, teorainn, baclainn... Tá sórt cosanta ar Éire mar ainm stáit, rud a fháganns nach mbeidh feidhm ag an athrú céanna air seachas i mbéal na ndaoine.

Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Gabh mo leithscéal Abigail but I must continue as Béarla.I always thought 'Eirinn' = that which pertains to or belongs to 'Eire' - from the Eire/Banba/Fodhla triple goddess who bestowed her name on the country.But then I never really got hold of nominative/genitive/dative thing i mBéarla.The generation born before 1940 is the last to really 'get' grammar i mo thuarim!

Sin 'Éireann', le 'nn' leathan!
(e.g. Dáil Éireann, Uachtarán na hÉireann)

Níl mé ró-eolach faoi na bandéithe a luaigh tú, ach seo díochlaonadh [=declension] an fhocail:

Éire = nominative
Éireann = genitive
Éirinn = dative, now used as nominative by some speakers/dialects.
