An Ghaeilge mar shlat tomhais!

I was talking recently to a head-hunter friend of mine stateside. He was talking about the difficulty of figuring out a candidate's intelligence for non-scientific jobs. So much bluff, bluster and show nowadays it's hard to figure out how good the candidate really is, intelligence-wise.

When I informed him about the Irish educational system and all that, he came up with the idea that when recruiting Irish candidates that, all things being equal, the recruiting agencies should test the candidates' ability as Gaeilge. "It's like math" he said, "you just can't bluff it".

In the Celtic Tiger era you had to take whoever came along but now companies can pick and choose. But now Gaeilge could be employed as the decisive factor, seeing as they all learn it for 13 years, as my pal said.

No doubt, I reinforced him in his opinion!

Gaeilge mar shlat tomhais don jab - what a good argument i gcomhair na Gaeilge.

Even if my name was Kevin Myers, I could not think of a better decisive intelligence test.

Anyway, when I watch RTE on the internet,I get worried about the ability of politicians to deal with the present crisis in Ireland - especially if they can't even sppeak Irish well.

After all, the best English speakers in Ireland in average are Gaeilgeoirí.

Ar aghaidh linn!
