Why should Ireland need a "national bird"? And by the way: All those Irish birds speak English! Nach ndeirtear "béarla na n-éan"? So how could one of them be a "national bird"? ;-) Lars (Message edited by Lars on July 25, 2009) |

quote:All countries have a national bird and a national flower, à la “áiteann órga!”Dtig?? and a national anthem à la “Du gamla,du fria!” Dtig? No, not all countries have a national bird or national flower. Why should they? quote:Lars: What’s the national bird/flower /anthem of your country?? Well, there's a black eagle in our coat of arms. But I wouldn't consider it a "national bird". It's a heraldic eagle, no real bird. We don't have a national flower, or a national mammal, or a national insect, or a national frog either. Lars |

Tá éan náisiúnta ag Éireann ceart go leor, ach tá na hÉireannaigh ag iarradh é a choimeád faoi cheilt faoi láthair mar gheall ar an gcontúirt chúltorta* a bhaineann leis. Scaoilimse an rún daoibh d'ainneoin sin: http://eurovision.ndr.de/teilnehmer/dustintheturkey4.html Ach bígí cúramach! *contúirt chúltorta = danger of backfiring (Message edited by ormondo on July 26, 2009) Is geal leis an bhfiach dubh a ghearrcach féin.

We have a national flower/plant in the Shamrock. Like Scotland has the Thistle, England the Rose etc. But I've never heard of a National Bird of Ireland. That's not to say it doesn't exist. |

I have searched the internet (as well as a few books such as guides to Ireland, etc.) and found several lists of national birds matched to country. Not every country has one, and Ireland is one of those that doesn't have a national bird, at least not "officially" anyway. On the other hand, few other countries can boast a musical instrument as a national symbol, but Ireland's first official symbol is the harp... |

Lars: There is a heraldic martlet in our coat of arms, and I thought it might be the 'national bird' of Ireland!!Evidently, Ireland has not declared a 'national bird' because that would be 'politically incorrect' and piss off all the other birds...and they would fly away!! few other countries can boast a musical instrument as a national symbol Well, the kantele is the Finnish national instrument... the Whooper swan is our bird, Lily of the valley our flower, although the Rowan was suggested by the national flower committee in the 1960's.
