Bain is a common verb with no straightforward English equivalent. Its basic meaning is one of removal, extraction, release, etc. For instance, Do bhaineamair prataí "We dug potatoes". But it entres into a number of idiomatic expressions that are hard to relate to this basic meaning and this is one of them. Bain do means "touch" and (by extension) "interfere with", "concern", "happen to", etc. "...the man didn't interfere with them" seems the most likely interpretation in this instance. |
