I find myself often confused with the preposition "for/for the".. There seems to be so many ways to use it. Could someone explain it, in the following context so I can wrap my head around with the various options for it. From le haghaidh to do/don and so forth.. I know it seems basic/trivial.. but well.. here I am! :)

"I went to the shop for milk."

"For reasons unknown to me."

"Did you buy that for me?"

"I wrote an essay for the college."

"I did it for fun."

"Is there anything for sale?"

"Stand for the national anthem."

It's always stumped me too. I think 'do' and 'le' or 'le haghaidh' are good for most. Sometimes a slight re-wording is better.
For your sentences I'd say the following.. wait for the grammar folk.. I've throw the grammar books away because I'm only interested in conversational Irish language.

Chuaigh mé chuig an siopa chun báinne a fháil
Ar cuiseanna i ngan fhios dom (ar)
Ar cheannaigh tú é sin domsa (do)
Scríobh mé aiste don choláiste (do)
Rinne mé é le haghaidh spraoi (le haghaidh píosa craic)
An bhfuil rud ar bith ar díol (on sale) le díol (for sale)
Seas suas ar son an amhráIn náisiúnta (ar son, for sake of)

I think it'd rather be:

Ar chúiseanna nach bhfuil a fhios agam.
Ar ábhair nach bhfuil a fhios agam.

To me, "i ngan fhios domh" rather means "without my knowing it".
