This from p 96 Buntús Cainte... How do you pronunce the following (prefer Munster if applicable) "Caithfidh siad an t-airgead a fháil." Is it "cafee may (u) tear-guht)(a) awl? ..with the parenthesized letters slurred over? GMA |

Munster would have: KAH-huh shee-ud uh TAH-rig-yud (uh) AWL (As if written "Caithe siad a' t-airigead (a) áil") Or they'd say "Caithfid an t-airgead a fháil" Caithfid is there "CAH-hidd" The -f- of "caithfid(h)" is pronounced as an h in this form. The pronunciation you have given seems to be for caithfidh mé and not caithfid said, but anyway, the f is pronounced h. Caithfid: kaahi Siad: shee-ad an: un t-airgead: tarrigyad a fháil: aahl |

caithfid is KAH-hidd. caithfidh siad is KAH-huh shee-ud. Learn Irish pronunciation here: http://loig.cheveau.ifrance.com/irish/irishsounds/irishsounds.html & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

Grma, A Lughaidh agus A UG.. Very helpful, and is sea, I DID forget and mix up/forgot to put in "mé" agus "siad".... AND somewhere I have the tapes for that page of Buntús Cainte...but I can't find them. (:) I guess the thing that struck me the most was the pron. of the addition of the "y" sound in "TAH-rig-yud" agus "tarrigyad". It appears that I was trying to be so smart and vocalize the pphrase so fast as probably a native speaker would do that I completely forgot to include that "Y" Anyway...thanks. |

I used it to show that the g was slender. I dunno how to transcribe it in another way... Learn Irish pronunciation here: http://loig.cheveau.ifrance.com/irish/irishsounds/irishsounds.html & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/
