Hi, I am a vocalist and I'm trying to learn "Ceol An Phíobaire". I have the Irish lyrics, but the recording I have is fast enough that it's hard to follow and even harder to learn. Could anyone write them out for me phonetically? I would be a very happy person :)

I have no idea which version you are using. I used the Altan version... Donegal irish...a bit of it's own animal...and will undoubtedly sound different if your version's musician is from a different region.
It's not perfect, of course. I'm only a spring chicken. You're going to have to listen to it a few times through. It's hard to phonetically convey Irish sounds in English...but I did my best.

One bit of advice, too...if you plan to go with this version... go soft on "r"s at the end of a word. They're often soft or deleted entirely in this particular dialect.

Just listen to it, and you'll see where I went with this :P

Thanks so much! I can pick up most of the subtleties by listening... I have a good ear for diction. I actually have the version by Na Fili. Check it out if you haven't heard them; they're quite good.

Níl ! Fuaimníthear go normálta iad. Deirfinn gurb iad na ch-annaí (leathana) nach bhfuaimníthear mórán ins an iarthuaisceart.

By the way, your transcription is a bit strange. I know the song and the way it is pronounced by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and her sister, and really I wouldn't recognize their pronunciation in your transcription.
Example :

"O bay too do hee go may sheh 'n mahn ee-hyeh " is how i'd transcribe it.
(by the way the Ní Mhaonaigh sisters say "'n vahn ee-hyeh" if i remember well, ie. an mheán-oíche).

Maybe, the best way to learn the pronunciation would be just to listen to the song as sung by Mairéad and her sister... An English-like transcription will always be far from the truth...

Hey...I was listened to it, and wrote what I heard. I never promised a rose garden. They've def. got to listen to it, if they want to get the whole thing... I'm sure I missed a few things, and got some others wrong.
