Hello,

I'm doing some research and am trying to find out what 'for the cause' is in gaelic. Would anyone be able to advise on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Victoria

"Ar son na cúise" is the usual phrase.

It's often said in an ironical tone. It's even the name of a comic 'mock-newspaper' pullout in the Irish language paper Foinse.

I know someone who had a proposal for a cookery programme called 'Ar Son na Cous-Cous'. Sadly, it was turned down.

Thank you so much, that's really helpful. Would you be able to advise how this is pronunced phonetically?

Thanks!
Victoria

I'm sure others can do better, but here's a try at it:

That's about as good as you can get using an English respelling. On the outside chance that the OP reads IPA: [ɛ̝rʲˌsˠön̪ˠəˈku̟:ʃɪ].

A Dhomhnaillan,

Cad is brí don frása sin: breac-na_dtruslóg?
ag bacadail? bacach?

An gcreidfeá é dá ndéarfainn leat ná feadar féin?

breac = freckled
na dtruslóg = of the long loping strides

Is mar sin a thuigimse é. An fíor go bhfuil cosa fada fút, a Dhomhnaillín? An bhfuil tú rua? Nó an brat deataigh (smokescreen) ar fad an méid seo?

Cinnte go bhfuil bricíní agus cosa fada agam, ach is de bharr an bhéil atá agam go bhfuil an ainm sin orm!

Is oth liom a rá go níor thuigh mé do cheist.

breac = freckled
Go raibh maith agat, a Dennis. D'fheicinn ag an sainmhíniú micheart.

An de bharr an canúna nach dtuigeann tú an cheist sin, a Phádraig, nó an bhfuil cúis eile ann?

Ní thuigim an chromhréir (gramadach). Níl ach giota beag Gaeilge agam. Cuir Béarla air seo: An gcreidfeá é dá ndéarfainn leat ná feadar féin? le do thoil.

An gcreidfeá é

Would you believe it

dá ndéarfainn leat

if I were to tell you / say to you

ná feadar féin?

that I don't know myself?
