so...I've always understood the difference between isteach/amach and istigh/amuigh but what is the difference between istigh/amuigh and laistigh/lasmuigh? I noticed that on the cover of the new buntús "CD Inside" is rendered "laistigh" when I would have used "istigh" - althoguh I just discovered laistigh/lasmuigh last week when I found it in a novel as well as RS for the first time in the same day. also...why is it "tá sé ina mhaidin," but "tá an tráthnóna/iarnóin/oíche ann?" |

"Laistigh" and "lasmuigh" are equivalent to "taobh istigh" and "taobh amuigh", and both sets are generally found followed by the preposition "de": lasmuigh den eaglais = taobh amuigh den eaglais = outside (of) the church lasmuigh de na samplaí seo = taobh amuigh de na samplaí seo = outside of these examples = aside from these examples The same works with "laistiar" and "lastoir": laistiar den altóir = taobh thiar den altóir = behind the altor "An seanchas gearr, an seanchas is fearr."

Ah, yes, I do remember seeing that in the novels. Thanks. |
