so...what exactly is the difference between roimh and sula?

I've heard "déanaim an chocaireacht sula n-ith mé dinnéar" and "ithim bricfeasta roimh an obair"

what's the difference?

a very fine one.

I think the difference is that sula implies that the thing done before is a prerequisite to doing the thing after.

Beirigh at t-uisce sular n-ólann tú é (nó is duit is measa)

Whereas roimh just implies sequence.

But I could be wrong, and seeing a difference that is not there.

The difference is
- a verb follows after sula (sula n-ithe mé dinnéar)
- a noun follows after roimh (roimh an obair).

Sula is a conjunction, and roimh is a preposition.
Both translate as "before" in English (but not so in other languages, e.g. German sula = "bevor, ehe", and roimh = "vor".)

As Lars said, the difference is simply that roimh is a preposition (so it can't be used before a conjugated verb, but only before nouns or verbal nouns) and sula is a conjunction... so normally it can only be used before conjugated verbs.

So, you say : sula n-ithim but not *roimh ithim
and roimh an obair, not *sula an obair

little typos: an t-uisce; sula n-ólann

thanks. i usually find that when there's something puzzling in Irish there is a very simple explanation...finding that explanation, however.....

I'm glad to have swiftly found those "in the know"
