Hello all,

I've been lurking here for a while and thought I'd seek some advice. Obviously, there are a lot of folks here that are far more advanced than I. (It can be a bit frustrating [intimidating?] when informative threads begin in English and end in Irish. I lack the ability to read most of it, so learning here has been tough, but I keep trying.)

I've just finished Pimsleur and am ready to move on. It took me about a month to get through the 8 lessons, repeating each 2 to 3 times, then one more pass quickly through all 8. I am surprised how well I've done with it, having retained 99% of the content with pronouciation proficiency. (No illusions, I realize I've just scratched the surface. Too bad this course isn't comprehensive, because it really worked well for me.) Still, I am left with the feeling that I've not so much learned to speak a little Irish, so much as I've memorized a few phrases. Not the ultimate goal. So, to suppliment, I've been reading all the grammar and pronounciation materials I can find on the web and am beginning to get a handle on spelling and some of the grammar rules.

I have purchased "Teach me Irish" and "Teach Yourself Irish" and was going to dive into one of them this week. However, having read the threads here re: Rosetta Stone, I ended up ordering the full course. Its been my understanding that although expensive, RS is the best you can get.

So, I guess I am inclined to wait a day or two for RS to arrive intead of launching into one of the others.

Any words of wisdom for moving beyond Pimsleur?

TIA,
Fitz

Buntús Cainte if you're a true beginner, but run with the RS for awhile...see what you need when you're done with that.

Also, please post your thoughts/comments/complaints to the RS Review thread.

couple of tips, though...

Change the settings for voice to "difficult" and change the settings for writing away from "punctuation sensitive" (just uncheck that entirely) and add "diacritic sensitive." I took off caps sensitivity as well...but make sure it keeps you accountable for the fadas...

go n-éirí leat!

Thank you Antaine. I have done flashcards for the first 10 chapters of Buntús Cainte, which were pretty easy, but I dont own the set.

Guess I'll dive into RS and see if I can do it.

it starts off basic enough that units one and two (core lessons 1-4 in both) will be mostly recap for you with some new vocab. Unit 3, however, will plunge you into new constructions and grammatical concepts.
