As Buntús Cainte, ceacht 30:

Fuair mé ocht scilling sa phóca sin.
I got eight shillings in that pocket.

An bhfuil "fuair mé ocht scilling" ionann agus "tá ocht scilling agam"?

I mBéarla "I got" = "I've got" = "I have". Ach ní mar sin atá sé i nGaeilge!
quote:

An bhfuil "fuair mé ocht scilling" ionann agus "tá ocht scilling agam"?

Ní hionann an dá abairt.

Dála an scéil (= BTW), tá an chopail ag teastáil san abairt sin.

Cúpla sampla eile:

Is ionann iad.

Is ioanann "bord" agus "tábla".

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

Aha! So...

An ionann "fuair mé ocht scilling" agus "tá ocht scilling agam"?

... would've been the right way to phrase that question?

Bingo!

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

I think the English translation of that phrase is either very misleading or simply negligent.

"Fuaras + place" is customary translated "I found", not "I got".

Gaelainn na Mumhan abú!
