What is the proper way to say "I am free" . Would it be "tá mé saor" or "is mise saor"? or something else entirely?

Tá mé saor.

The second sentence would make sense only if your name were "Saor".

Is mise Seán. = I'm Seán.
Is mise Saor. = I'm Saor.

Then there's (just to confuse you!) this sentence with the noun "saor = craftsman":

Is saor mise. = I am a craftsman.

Yes, yes, Dennis... But how would you say, "I am drug-free"?

Thanks! So tá mé is used with adjectives, and is mise with nouns? I think I can remember that. I'm trying to learn Irish on my own from books and tapes which are not always clear on when things are appropriate.

Is mise is used when you are talking about your name, Is mise Riona etc. Is X me is used for saying you are a something such as Is dalta me (I'm a student). Ta me is used sometimes when you are applying an adjective to yourself such as Ta me saoire above. But if you want to say you are tired or hungry or such things you say Ta tuirse orm, ta ocras orm etc. this literally means "tiredness is on me, hunger is on me" so its more complicated then you suspect.
