KINGS - Chicago premiere!
2007, Tom Collins, Ireland/UK, 88 min.
With Colm Meaney, Donal O’Kelly

April 4-10
Fri. and Mon.-Thu. at 6:15 pm and 8:00 pm;
Sat. at 3:00 pm, 4:45 pm, 6:30 pm, and 8:15 pm;
Sun. at 3:15 pm and 5:00 pm

The first major motion picture shot largely in Irish Gaelic, KINGS is adapted from Jimmy Murphy’s play The Kings of Kilburn Road. Five long-estranged boyhood friends meet in a London pub for a boozy tribute to a sixth, Jackie, recently dead. Bonded through blood and friendship when they left Ireland in the 70s, all have failed in life except for Joe (Meaney), whose success is built on betrayal. Tour-de-force performances by a remarkable crew of actors fluidly alternating Gaelic and English make this a gripping and eloquent look at the aftermath of dreams. In Irish Gaelic and English with English subtitles. 35mm. (BS)

Will this film ever be on DVD?

Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.

Níl mé cinnte. Bhí sé ar an liosta fada le haghaidh na hOscars, ach níor roghnaíodh é.

Not sure. It was under consideration for the Oscars (foreign-language film), but didn't make the short list.

OK, chonaic mé Kings aréir. Agus rinne mé mo dhícheall gan bheith ag féachaint ar na fotheidleanna, ach... Bhí mé in ann an chuid is mó don chaint a thuiscint, buíochas le Dia. Molaim daoibhse nach bhfaca an scannáin seo go fóill é a fheiceáil dá mbeadh seans agaibh.

Nílim cinnte an raibh abhar Gradam Ocsar ann, ach bhí seans ann, i mo thuairim, an Ghaeilge a chur chun chinn i mbealach eile nach bhfacamar roimhe seo.

[Saw Kings last night. It was REALLY difficult not to read the subtitles, but I was pleasantly surprised to have understood the majority of the dialogue! Mayhaps this film will spark a chain reaction of Major-motion-Irish-language-picture-filmness!

Note to "beginners" or those who think they won't "get it"...: Please give attention to this film and its like, as most verbage is dialogue and is much more likely to be understood.]

OK, chonaic mé Kings aréir.

Mise leis! An rabhais ag a léiriú ar cheathrú t'réis a sé a chlog nó ar a hocht?

Thuigeas cuid comhrá, ach níorbh é a fhormhór. Táim ag machnamh ar fhilleadh trathnóna amárach chun féachaint air athuair.

Maith thú, a Dhomhnaill! Bhí mé i measc an scata an-bheag ag ceathrú tar éis a sé Dé Máirt, mise agus m'fhear chéile gan Gaeilge. (HA! Scríobh me "gan Béarla" ar dtús = lucky bastard :-)

An raibh seans 'ad an scannán a fheiceáil an dara huair?

Bhí, ach níor chuaigh mé ann. Tháinig an doirteán orm i n-am deireadh agus fuair mé fliuch báite. Mar ní fíor-Ghael atá ionam, níl mé cleachta leis an anró agus ní raibh fonn orm dul amach i ndrochaimsir an athuair!
