Hi, I think I have posted before so sorry if this is redundant. I need a translation on the name "Mick". I know there are 2 ways of saying it. It was my father's nickname so it's for an other man. Also, a translation of "Leo". Thank you so much if you can help me! -Megan |

Megan, this may seem a bit obvious but 'Mick' is not really a 'nickname'. It is just a shortened name or 'pet name' as we often call it, for Michael. Its the same story with 'Mike'. You often see the latter name spelled 'Maidhc' in Irish because that is the nearest way of making the name sound right when using Irish spelling, its not a translation. I don't recall ever seeing the name 'Mick' rendered into Irish spelling, possibly because it would have to be 'Mic', causing some confusion. Names like Michael Patrick and Leo are common with Irish people but they are not Gaelic names, rather they stem from the introduction of Christianity into Irish culture and the adoption of Latin and Greek-based names from the bible with adapted spelling. Micheal is the Irish spelling of Michael. Someone can tell you if there is supposed to be a fada (accent mark) in there somewhere. Most of those borrowed names from the Bible mentioned above have aquired Irish spellings and pronunciations over the years. Beir bua agus beannacht |
