How would you say a sentence like "You should be able to write better now"? "Ba chóir gurbh fhearr ab fhéidir leat scríobh anois" is about the best I can come up with but I'm far from sure, especially about 'gurbh' and 'ab'. Thanks Séamus Ó Murchadha Caighdeán mo Thóin!

You're making life awfully complicated for yourself there. 1 - Ba chóir duit bheith in ann scríobh nios fearr anois. or 2 - Ba chóir go mbeifeá in ann scríobh nios fearr anois or 3 - Ba chóir gurbh fhéidir leat scríobh níos fearr anois (though this would seem to me to mean 'possibility' rather than'ability'. As a learner myself, of course, I'm open to correction... |

Fadaspresent’s sentences look alright. You could also say: Ba chóir gurbh fhearr a scríobhann tú anois (or in Ulster: ba chóir go mb’fhearr a scríobhas tú anois). You could use "ábalta" too: ba chóir go mbeifeá ábalta scríobh níos fearr anois Learn Irish pronunciation here: www.phouka.com/gaelic/sounds/sounds.htm & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

Ba chóir go mbeadh feabhas tagtha ar do scríbhneoireacht* ag brath ar chomhthéacs. A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river
