Ones says 'ag an mbaile' for location

But what if ones says for directions, ag dul chuig an mbaile (a' goil eg a' mbaile)?

Now I have written it, I see that 'ag dul' is what would have to signal that it is a statement of direction and location.

I think I recall that the difference was once signaled by either lenition or eclipsis, but of course, that is not so now

In Ulster we say "sa bhaile" for location, and "chun an bhaile" (pronounced as if "na bhaile") for direction.

In Old Irish, I think there was something like "isin m-baile" = location and "isin bhaile" = direction (isin = sa in Modern Irish). But wait for Dennis' answer, 'cause I may be mistaken, and he will be able to explain that better than me.

Seo é mo thuiscint go ndeirtear “ar an mbaile” – “in the village” ach “ag baile/ sa mbaile” – “at home” i gConamara agus i gCúige Múmhan araon. Ina theannta sin, is féidir úsáid a bhaint as déantúis iomadúla “ag an mbaile”, “go dtí an baile”, “’na bhaile” le “a ghoil” i gConamara. Cén deacracht atá leis sin?

Nil aon fadhb orm, a Pheadair. Thosaigh me an ceist, agus, ansin, d'fhreagair me mo cheist fein.

Tá tú ceart, seo é mo chás-sa féin go hiondúil :)
