There is an unfortunate tendency on the part of the media to turn everything into a contest with a simplistic 'either-or' outcome. The general public and even our elected and non-elected leaders all too often fall into the trap and accept this line of 'reasoning' if such it can be called, and all that it emplies.

One possible implication behind this seemingly light-hearted contest is that the right of present-day Welsh to exist as a minority language can be called into question. Whether we are speakers of Welsh or Irish or any other minority language within the Anglophone world, we can and will be required to justify ourselves from time to time, particularly during the media 'silly season' when there is a need to fill a few column inches.
